• Went to Watermans Pier in Port Orchard Saturday 9/28/2019 @ around 2am to about 4am, tide was still coming in. Looks like High tide would have been @ 4:54am @ 11.41ft. No squid. There was a ton of fish fry all around the docks which leads me to believe the squid are not this far south yet.

lee 4 days ago  Reply      0likes currently

  • Redondo Pier is closed and probably won’t open for this season squidding. City council going to vote on the assessment of the pier repair next month. Citizen looked at the pier pilling and there were issues that need to be addressed before it can open the pier. Repairs are going to be expensive and there is no budget for it. As of now DesMoines city marina suggest buying a $25 parking permit for 3 months to access DesMoines pier 24hours. With out the permit parking closes at 10pm.

  • As far as squid go usually this time of year they’re out in the straits headed this way.  Salmon we caught out there recently we’re full of squid which is a good sign because last year never saw one. I’m sure you may get lucky once in a while but for the most part you probably need a boat to get them this time a year because they arent spawning

Jw 2 months ago  Reply      0likes currently

    • I've been seeing posts online showing eggs washing up on Alki.  Seems like some of them might be spawning.  I have not found a good resource that describes the life cycle of puget sound squid.  Does anyone have a link that would help with that?

      LS 2 months ago

    • Ya maybe a few but if they were in people would be talking so its obviously something thats not the norm. They will come if you let them. Patience lol. I dont think there is such thing as patience in the washington sport fishery. Such short seasons and regs make it so. To bad.

  • Redondo is closed due to Pier integrity issues. Anyone know if it will open for the Squid run? Also, the no parking signs (10pm till 5am) alludes to a permit. Does anyone have any information about this?

After dark anchored and setup the lights, surface and underwater. Had a decent bite for a short time then it turned off though plenty of schools going by. Trying to figure out if the underwater lights were a problem or it was simply that the tide changed.

Got limit in 2 hours. underwater lights are always in my arsenal which do make a positive diff imo. Green lights attract small baitfish/ squid follow bait and light. Can anyone tell me how the hell to get the floaters to bite? Had more squid near mid to quarter depth then bottom but couldnt get them to commit? Only bottom squirts. • Des Moines was busy at high tide (5-6pm).  Not much after that, but you wouldn't know when they come through because everyone just stands around with their jigs out of the water.  They all hope they will see someone catch something and then chase the schools....but if NO ONE is fishing, how you gonna know they are here?  You can't catch anything if your line is out of the water.

      Petzel 10 months ago

    • Have used one green u.w. light set to its rated depth (3m) but always with surface LED lights.  Did better with it than without it but did not see a remarkable change.  Used both 12 & 24vdc.  On the nights it was used the hot ticket was always someone with a generator and a bank of halogen lights down the pier.

  • Is this sounding like a bunk year or a late show up year? Only been out during the day on a boat have marked boat loads of bait and predator fish just not any squid. Fishing between shilshole and elliot bay. May try out jeffs head and the deep drop offs next outing and try the 150-200 fow mark. If not, give night anchoring a try and if not hanging it up until black mouth season start or hear of good reports consistently.

      J a year ago

  • you can get 2 to 4 lbs. of squid at Edmonds most nights .If you have good jigs that is what most of the guys and gals are telling me. Some colors of jigs are working better then others. Some night there in the top 20 feet of water and others nights just off bottom. Had 3 friends that went last night they got 2 to 4 lbs. each but had to work for them.

    red68 a year ago  Reply      0likes currently

Ryan a year ago  Reply      0likes currently

    • I just bought 40000 lumen flood light from amazon. They are bright but huge. Only uses 400w. It's bright enough, but there is 50000 or 60000 lumen ones. I think 40k lumen is as bright as 1500w halogen i had before.

      Joe23 a year ago

    • usually, LED 100w equal to halogen 500w, 10000 lumen for 100w led. so, 200w led might equal to two of 500w halogen. for pier which allowed generator, go with 500w led is good idea. I upgraded to 800w led and I think it is too big..

    Joe23 a year ago  Reply      0likes currently

  • I too was at Edmonds.  People were doing very well.  I'm a noob at this and even caught two myself.  Felt like when a school came through, people started catching them.  Then they'd pass through and it'd be dead for a while until another school came through.  Herring were biting well.  Crabbing was mostly red rocks.

LS a year ago  Reply      0likes currently

    • @LS - at night, pops and I were good at browns bay (north of Edmonds) at 30-50 ft. Anchored...   During the day, we have not been successful but we were usually fishing/focusing on something else. All in area 9

      Petzel a year ago

    • Thanks Petzel.  Good info.  I've always wondered if there would be more in deeper water, and most folks fish shallow just because of the piers.  I'll likely try similar depths just south of edmonds in 10 in the next few weeks.  Just waiting for a night off, and a decent catch report!  Anyone catching in Edmonds yet?

      LS a year ago

    • Around piers is best because the lights and structure is what they like .most of the sound is mud.ive tried many places in boat and all ways best by piers.i go downtown Seattle anchor boat near pier that won't piss coast guard off and do very good.some just anchor right out by seacrest pier and do good there to.mainly in 40 to 80 ft of water.the squid come in shallow at night .if I'm going in day I stay 70 ft to 100.unless no where they are nesting then can catch pretty much any time.

    red68 a year ago  Reply      0likes currently

  • FYI.  Des Moines night parking permit $25.00 for 3 months. October 1 - December 31, 2018.  Just got mine today.  After 10pm, if you don't have parking permit, the ticket will be $175.00 and possible towing.

  • Redondo pier parking is now closed 10pm - 5am ***unless you have a fishing/overnight pass.**  This is due to a shooting a few weeks ago.  Passes will be available at the des moines marina.  Drivers lisc, fishing lisc and vehicle registration will be required.  Not sure what it will cost.

    • I'll post a link to the police chief's bulletin if allowed...?

      sideburns a year ago

    • I’m pretty sure it’s $35 for 3 months. They split the year into 4 quarters. This quarter started on the first of September so it’s a good time to go get your parking pass.

      FjForrest a year ago

    • Sideburns: Not sure where you got this "fishing overnight pass" for Redondo pier. I went to the Marina office today (Oct 3) and they never heard of it. They do have the Des Moines Marina 24 hour pass for fisherman. The ladies in the Marina office said there was some informal agreement a fisherman made with local LEO about a tag you can display in the street at Redondo but has since been revoked. Too bad...would have been nice to go back to showing up at 2 am or 3 am when the crowds are thinned out.

    • The is a link to the city of des moines police chief's letter to the public

      http://waterlandblog.com/2018/07/30/police-chief-thomas-sends-out-another-letter-about-criminal-activity-in-redondo

The des moines marina website has some very vague night parking permit info also.

  • does anybody have a suggestion for a non-pier area in the gig harbor/port orchard area? I have access to a small boat that I'm hoping will help me stay away from the crowds this year, but I will be limited to calm waters. Wollochet? gig harbor? Sinclair inlet? Any tips will be much appreciated!

    • Squid around 12-3am at les Davis last night and caught 2 squids not much of anything...... lots herrings though......

      Squid101 a year ago

    • The Fox Island pier is not crowded.  I'd avoid Wollochet due to swift currents at the mouth.  Sinclair might be good.  Let us know!

      Hokum a year ago

    • Thanks folks. I'll be sure to post any results I have when I finally get out. I tried FI pier last year, but they close promptly at 5PM...

  • Don't know what the effects will be but Redondo Pier has a new No Parking after 10 PM statute. This hurts those of us who squid fish early (real early) morning to try and escape the overcrowding which we all know will occur when the large schools run this fall.

    P E Ham a year ago  Reply      0likes currently

  • 8/17/18 Les Davis.  Caught one 4" squid.  Won't bother going back until 8/31.  Will report then.
