Anybody been trying at the wheel lately???

Holly 7 months ago  Reply

@Lee you need to click the menu and go back into Home catch reports where it starts with 2010 and clock on 2018... you won some jigs Sir.  Good work in 2017 everyone. Great year of inkin

Ed Lee 7 months ago

@Cashman: Only 3 people, including me. And all of us were catching.

Squiddy 7 months ago  Reply

Nice!

Cashman 7 months ago

Most people quit currently, but for some reason squids stay longer than we thought. Went to Edmonds last night for 2.5 hours starting at low tide, caught 8 lbs. Schools came and gone, but they didn't stay as long as in November. However, they came quite often, like every 15 minutes. Many doubles too. Really good for the 1st of February

Squiddy 7 months ago  Reply

Super report.  Thumbs up!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jeff 7 months ago

Dang, thats awesome! Might have to check it out tonight

Cashman 7 months ago

how many people were out there?

Cashman 7 months ago

Great! Thank you for report Squiddy!

Lee 7 months ago

Unexpected good night 1/28 at Edmonds. Saw several people caught 7-8 lbs from 7-10:30 PM. Most people would say it was a great night especially in late January.

Squiddy 7 months ago  Reply

Cashman. Les Davis and the parking lot are open 24 hours. The bathroom gets locked around 9 pm. No electrical outlets.

Hokum 7 months ago  Reply

Edmonds last night was a little slower than night before still caught some probly couple lb.was best close to the low slack.

Fishalot 7 months ago  Reply

I went to edmonds 3 night ago around 8pm and caught 5 squids within 40 minutes (great bites) I had to leave because it was super windy with rain and my son was complaining. Im going back tonight by myself lol.

Datsquid 7 months ago  Reply

Edmonds 945-1 5.5lb. Windy night but not to wet atleast.

Fishalot 7 months ago  Reply

When will the squid candy jigs appear online?  The small firefly's are awesome top jigs but always sold out at the Narrows Marina.

Hokum 8 months ago  Reply

I am waiting also.. really want to see their full line up.

Lee 8 months ago

This is my first year squidding.  Started with two jigs.  Caught 5# on Jan 5th when I went to a medium firefly on the bottom, a fatboy or 010 in the middle & the small firefly on top.  The little firefly top jigs are deadly but hard to find.

Hokum 8 months ago

My first 10#'s was when I used just two squid candy jigs in November.  The squid candy guy said to use just one but I've found the set up that works for me.  I just need more of the little guys to try a 4 jig set up.

Hokum 8 months ago

Anybody tried farther south? Redondo, Dash point or Tacoma area? Clyde Davidson?

Cashman 8 months ago  Reply

Went to Les Davis on the 15th & caught 5 squid from 5 to 6 pm.  School came in at 6 but I had to go.  Some said Dash Point is still fair fishing.

Hokum 8 months ago

Nice! Thanks for the response! Ive been thinking about checking it out since Edmonds is slowing down, but Des Moines has been terrible this year and didn't really want to waste my time

Cashman 8 months ago

Hokum, have you fished Les Davis after dark? Apparently the parking lot and pier is "closed" after dark?

Cashman 8 months ago

Edmonds 830-11 got 25 or so I think .gave them to lady down there I have to many in freezer.does seem like season is about over . But the tides really are not great maybe next week a little better.

Fishalot 8 months ago  Reply

25 is actually a lot for mid January. Thank you for posting.

Squiddy 8 months ago

I learned that at the end season squidding jigging slow works best. Sometimes I got luck on just dangling my lines/jig, then I felt the squid bites. I jig it every 5 seconds.

Huli 8 months ago

Well I've been squiding along time probly 30 years in Washington. It's best to go around a tide change first of all everything  in salt water is active then,I use a fly rod with light line 6lb it's very easy to feel bite.when there it not a lot around you must be able to tell when they pick it up.use the lightest smallest jig  you can get away with and still get down I use 1/2oz most time or smaller with unweighted top jig.when I jig I never let line go slack they always hit on way down or when not moving .by slowing the fall down with you rod you will get more bites.if do that way once you get down you will catch more.most people use jigs that are to heavy and let jig free fall it's makes it tough to feel when they pick it up..i make my own jigs size and weight I want.hope this helps.

Fishalot 8 months ago

1/16, 7pm-10pm, Edmonds, another slow night. People getting 0 ~ 10 squid tonight.  I got nothing for first 2hrs than got lucky to catch 4 later. Power outlets working now.

Lee 8 months ago  Reply

Edmonds. 1/15/18 10pm-12am. Caught 3 squids. Look like the season is ended for Edmonds.

Squiddy 8 months ago  Reply

  • Anyone try Edmonds besides Lee?  Wondering if after midnight and/or early AM is better?

JP SPORTZ 8 months ago  Reply

I only go evening time. But, talk with people who are there everyday(yes I am there almost everyday also). When I asked them how was it after I leave, they told me how good or bad. Lastweek, Mon~Wed, they got up to 10lbs, Thurs~Fri, they got up to 5lbs. Sat, up to 3lbs. Those are who usually stay until midnight. Seems like it is tapering..

Lee 8 months ago

Edmonds 6:30 to 7:20. 1 squid. Lol

Lee 8 months ago  Reply

Lol.  Nice work Lee. Might have gotten the last one

Petzel 8 months ago

1/13/18, 7pm-8:30pm, Edmonds, I didn't knew posts below. I would love to say hello to all. Anyway, as Alxtm and Jamo mentioned, it was slow. Only 7~7:30 was not bad on our spot. I got 10 squid and my son got 6 squid on that time. But, after that 30min, it was dead slow. Seems like spin off season also going to an end..

Lee 8 months ago  Reply

1/12/18 - 5pm to 7pm. Les Davis. Only 4 people fishing. Slow. One of the guys snagged a herring. Then he ate it raw to gross out his friend.

Hokum 8 months ago  Reply

01/11/18, 2-4:45am. Edmonds. It was slow for the first hour then it picked up, then the seal showed up. Got 2# of squid today. Could have been limit I'm sure cause every time the seal dive in it pushes all squid scrambling on top water and there was a lot of squid swimming away for their lives from the annoying seal. Still a great and fun morning. Left just in time for the rain to pour. Have fun guys and be safe.

Huli 8 months ago  Reply

Edmonds, 6 - 9pm, I got 5 lbs, power is off. bring generator with you.

Lee 8 months ago  Reply

1/9/18, 7pm-8pm, Edmonds. Rain and rain. Very slow evening. Some got some but not much. I got nothing for 1 hour jigging. People talk about how good yesterday was.. seal pup show up and stay. Water is little murky. Rain got stonger so I left. It was pouring. Hope squid came back after 8pm and make those hardcore squidders happy.

Lee 8 months ago  Reply

1/8/18, 11;20pm to 1;30 6 guys got limit and become calm,

John 8 months ago  Reply

1/8/18, 5pm-7pm, Edmonds. People caught few squid before getting dark. After lights are on, squid start making school. Big school formed strong lights on north. Joined that group and start catching steady for 30min or more. Was hot around 6pm. Bite slow down after seal show up. I was next to veteran squidder who have been squidding for 35 years. Sure he knows how to catch those inkers. He catch 2 or 3 squid while I catch one squid. While I got 2.5lbs, he got 6 or 7lbs. I have to leave 7pm to pick up my boy. Really want to stay longer... I am pretty sure squid show up again after 7pm. Feel like its getting little better day by day.
 I lost 3 jigs today..
Where is Red these days??

Lee 8 months ago  Reply

Nice job Lee! Also, you may want to put a egg sinker at the bottom of your jig, and when lowering your rod, do it very slowly so you know when it touches the bottom. The sinker will hit the bottom first, and your jig won't actually hit the bottom if you pull up quick enough. I have not loose any jigs since doing this.

Squiddy 8 months ago

Edmonds from 12-3:30am this morning - 1/8.  Squid were all over.  Seal came by so I turned off my light. (Thanks Co-Worker!)  that seemed to work. as I pulled in 45 lil inkers @ about 6.5 total lbs.  Not bad for the only fool out there.  Sorry Pops, it was last minute.  Weather wasn't as bad as I thought. well, it was sometimes but it died down a bit and still a good test to fish in the wind.  The inkers were all over the surface mostly but when they were not biting there they were biting lower. just had to go find them.  Forgot my rain/warm pants as I would have stayed later.  Tired now, but work is paying for it :) - Thank you everyone, its been a great year!

Petzel 8 months ago  Reply

1/6/18, 5pm - 7pm. Les Davis. Slow for everyone. Most caught just 1 or 2 squid.

Hokum 8 months ago  Reply

1/7/18, 7pm-10pm, Edmonds. another nice warm night for squidding. It was little slower than yesterday. I got 1lb and my son got 2lbs. Like I posted before, my 12 year old boy out perform me all the time.
Today, not much squid on surface. They show up few times but not like yesterday. Most squid caught on bottom or middle of water. Squid are really picky again. There is only 5 minute burst that everyone catching. Other than that moment, Squid only come to what they choose to. It was slow steady night. Like 1 squid every 10 minute... seems like small pink perform better. 1 inch pure pink. They didn't bite on  white and pink lure or bigger pink tonight. But liked small pink. Green, blue, white also worked as always.
Heard people saying it was good on late last night. And they said squid bite more on late night these days. It might be good news to am squidders.

Lee 8 months ago  Reply

I've gone to Edmonds last few nights there still plenty around got like 5 lb one night and like 2 the next. Last few hrs of out going tide.some good sized schools around still .just depends on how many seals are around on how your night will end up.tight lines

Fishalot 8 months ago  Reply

I just returned from Edmonds. Caught nothing and lost 2 squid candies on snags. First time, learned a few things... will go more prepared next time.
But i saw a group of people cathcing a lot.

Alxtm 8 months ago

1/5/18, 6pm-10pm, Edmonds. Supposed to rain all evening but rain stopped early evening and 50 degree with no wind make really comfortable squidding. If there was some more squid bite, it was a perfect night. For sure there are more squid than last month. Thank you Petzel and Squiddy for let us know. Caught about 2lb on first 2hours. Than spend another 2 hours just watching other group catching squid. 500w led won tonight. Our group of people doesn't have strong light. So whenever squid show up, squid decide to stay around 500w led area. There was only one 500w led tonight. So, some people around there caught more than others.
Anyway. As Petzel and squiddy stated earlier, squid tend to float. More squid caught on surface than bottom. And even squid stay long enough on top so desperate squidder( like me) can just snag them. Squid who float are big ones. Squid caught on bottom are smaller. Saw hugh school of squid move in and out. Seal chase squid all the time. Squid are here for sure but they seems really picky. Early evening they bite green or blue. Later night they bite on small pink. Their movement and bite pattern remind me beggining of season. Is this second push that Petzel mentioned?

Lee 8 months ago  Reply

Lol. @ALXTM. And yes. I did tje same thing last year.  This year got a 300 Watt LED and i love it.  Made a breacket that slips right over the edmomds rail.  Thanks family for the help on that. And yes This has to be the second wave that I was told about. Great post Lee. And good work

Petzel 8 months ago

5-7pm. Edmonds.. lots of schools and lots of seals. Pops and I walked away with maybe 3 lbs.  Size was not as big as a couple days ago but we did see a lot more inkers.  Plus people. Maybe 30 total.  Had fun Pops! FYI.... Tide change seemed to be the hottest. All different depths as well. Current seemed to slow down when we left around 7. Home by 8. Not a bad night for January

Petzel 8 months ago  Reply

Edmonds. Walked in at 11:30 PM and saw 3 people walking out with about 6-7 lbs each. Slower late night, and I managed to get a bit over 2 lbs in 1.5 hours. Not any hot time, but squids came and went away. You might catch a few, then stopped for 5-10 minutes, and so on. Squids showed up near the surface at one time, then near bottom at other time. I just had to try different depth all the time. Wind started to pick up around 1 PM, and it was too cold to stay. It's still great to catch this much squids in January. Happy squidding everyone!

Squiddy 8 months ago  Reply

@Jordan & Suburi.... nothing that I have heard. But really only go to Edmonds and I have a work buddy that hits the wheel. He gets live phone calls when it's hotter then normal....  that's a squid buddy!
Also have to post when I went out two nights ago. Kept only 36 and it was close if not over 5 lbs. I had 4 that were a foot long body and tentacles... biggest ones I have seen all year

Petzel 8 months ago  Reply

Just talked to co worker. He hit the wheel on Sat. Got about 3 or 4 lbs. Next night. Nothing. His buddy called and said yesterday AM was ok again. They are still out there! Happy 2018 Inking Everyone.

12/31 9:00-11:55pm, Edmonds, when I got pier, only 3 people squidding. Their bucket have 5~20 squid each. They left as soon as I arived but wished me a luck. I start squidding alone. But, got squid on first cast. And 2 more squid in 10 min. But. That is it. Spend 2.5 hours for 1 more squid. Few people joined me and left. When I left pier, I was only one again. Heard firework celebrating end of 2017 squid season when I leave. Lol

Lee 8 months ago  Reply

Les Davis was good from 4:50 pm until 5:00 pm.  That's right! 10 minutes & dead.  Most were tiny but everyone caught at least one very large squid.

Hokum 8 months ago  Reply

Haha.10min of hot reports. But, better than nothing! I will be happy if I caught more than 5 squids these days..

Some nice schools at Les Davis right now.  Been here for 10 min & have 5 in the bucket.

Hokum 8 months ago  Reply

Hi, everyone.  We tried squidding for the first time in December 2016.  We didn't catch any but a very kind man squidding next to us shared some squid with us.  We are back visiting grandparents in Olympia again.  I brought my poles and squid jigs and want to try again with my kids.  We squidded at Point defiance last year.  We are planning to go tonight after dinner.  Where would you recommend...Pt Defiance again?  Les Davis? Dash Point?  Redondo?  Trying to drive less than 1 hour.  Thank you for your recommendations.  Will post if we have success!

JW 8 months ago  Reply

We went for 2 hours tonight and caught 8 at Les Davis.  Cold wind and lots of rain.  Very helpful squidder let us fish close to his 200W light.  My kids caught their first squids tonight!  Hope to try again sometime

JW 8 months ago

Edmonds, at high tide last night. A bit hot for 15 minutes, then a big seal came. Got around 10+ squids (yes I'm counting by squids instead of lbs). Saw another person got double of what I got. Water was calm and nice though.

Squiddy 8 months ago  Reply

I had a chance to go Federal way last saturday. So, I stopped by Redondo. Sure with fishing pole and bucket. People on pier said it is slow these days. But, still it is much better than Edmonds. From 5pm-7pm. People who are on good spot (good lighting, on top of school) got 5-10 lbs, people who can't get close to good spot got 2~3lbs. Bite slow down on 6:30pm.
Small pier, shallow water, no power outlet, no generator. Only bettery powered light.  Really nice people. Very kind. I really like these off-peak season squidding.

Lee 8 months ago  Reply

11/21/17, 4pm to 7 pm at Les Davis. Squid were schooling on the surface. Lots of snags. Lots of large squid. I got 17 & my friend got 18.  It was worth the trip.

Hokum 8 months ago  Reply

11/22/17, 1:45-4:00am, Seattle wheel. Slow caught a little over 1 lb. Squid on smaller sizes.

Huli 8 months ago  Reply

6pm-8pm, Edmonds, deadly slow night but really enjoyed fishing tonight. All the people at pier are kind and nice these days. We talk, laugh, celebrate. Too bad is that not much times to celebrate. So, Not much squid to bring home. But, I am back with warm heart. Guy next me gave me all his squid when he leave. One squid. I gave all my squid to next guy when I leave. Three squid. Lol

Des Moines was hot last night just after sunset. Got 5lbs in about 1.5 hours.

430pm to 530pm, Edmonds. 10 plus squiders, only two are getting squid they have more than 10 each. Very windy and cold. Eventually people are living because of the cold and wind. Left with nothing.

jamo888 9 months ago  Reply

Heading to Les Davis tomorrow around 3 pm before the lights come on. Pretty consistent around this time. Once the lights come on, you just have to wait until they school. As we all know, you just gotta wait until they do. Will report tomorrow.

Hokum 9 months ago  Reply

good post Squiddy and Lee - wondering if there is the late/early morning bite out there?  Have we noticed if incoming or outgoing tide matters at all recently? looks good tomorrow morning :) tide wise - happy inking to those hard core folks!
Lee - Fake salmon = any salmon that is not a Coho or King ;) - sorry I tease a lot.  Blame my Pops!

Petzel 9 months ago  Reply

Edmonds was slow late night, but not dead yet. Caught about 15 squids 11:30 - 1 PM. I was at the furthest side of the pier, but on the way out, I saw a couple anglers got about 5lbs near the beginning of the pier. Wind, rain, and cold temperature were added to the trip as extra pleasure!

Squiddy 9 months ago  Reply

Lol  It was really windy last night. I was at beginning of pier(north side) until 9pm. Yes there is some squid. actually it feel like little better than last week. the person who got 5lbs must be there for long time. :)

Lee 9 months ago

@Lee: The anglers that had 5lbs told me that they had lots of bites around midnight for about 30 minutes. Look like we need to be at the right spot and at the right time.

Squiddy 9 months ago

It's been a long time been at right time on right spot.. actually, it is not that long ago. but, It feel like it.

Lee 9 months ago

Tried Les Davis again this morning and it was still unproductive with 0 squid. Few squatters and even fewer squid. Looks like it is time to put the gear away until next year.

DL58 9 months ago  Reply

Edmonds, 6pm-9pm, no surprise for me, very slow, No rain, but strong wind. Only caught 4 squid. But, It was nice to back to pier again. It is cold and not much squid. But, atmosphere on pier is pleasant enough to keep me doing this fruitless activity. And if we are lucky, still there is chance of squid also. Happy squidding!

Lee 9 months ago  Reply

I am novice squidder and I am the one who pretend to know. But, when I fishing, I love to experiment and always pay attention what others do. Here is what I found about squid fishing pole.
Ulta light rod(noodle rod) - avoid, it might feel the squid better but hard to give jigging action to lure and when you haul in 2 or 3 squids together, it is hard to control.
Flyrod - usually fly rod are long and have light action while it have some backbone so it is good for squid fishing. But, look for action if you buying new one, some are noodle rod.  I think 6wt or 8wt fast action will be good.
Kokanee rod- I found some kokanee fishing rod are perfect for squid fishing. It have light action and have backbone. But problem is it is little expensive. And again, avoid ultralight ones.
Medium-light  rod - this is what I use for squid fishing when there is enough squid. When it is hot, it is all about speed. Who can put their jig quickly to where squid is (usually bottom) get squid more fast. So I put two weighted jigs(sure lighter one on top). Than, it is little too heavy for light rod. And when it is hot, usually two or three squid caught in once and little stronger rod handles load much better than other light-long action rod.
Generally speaking, any 6~8 ft, light power rod will work. Just don't use heavy rod.
Sorry for long post. I just wanted share some with begginers like me.

Lee 9 months ago  Reply

Checked Edmonds pier Friday evening, but, nothing. I might start again my winter night activity - making spinners/wedding rings.. I will still check Edmonds pier sometimes.

Lee 9 months ago  Reply

Good points everyone. The zip tie in the middle of the handle is brilliant.

Thanks Huli on the details..

Lee... how's the fake salmon fishing going? ;)

Hokum... keep talking to those regulars. Some of them have great info.  The others are like me. Pretend to know.

Happy Holidays everyone.  Aweome year and Happy New One!

12/16/17, 7:45-10am, Seattle the Wheel. 6lbs for today. People still catching on my way out. Fished low tide.

Huli 9 months ago  Reply

Yes Petzel, around 1 in 5 have tentacles that are the thickness of a pencil eraser.  Lots of comments that they were, "ocean squid"? from the regulars.

Hokum 9 months ago  Reply

Yes. There are some big ones not only longer in length but also distinguished by thick tentacles. I think people call them Jumbo.

Lee 9 months ago

Les Davis was slow but steady last night between 5 & 7 pm.  I caught 12. Heard it was good at around 3 pm.

Hokum 9 months ago  Reply

Good post hokum.  Any size?

Petzel 9 months ago

Petzel, do you a fly rod with a spinning reel to squid fish with? This was my first year squid fishing and I have been using a light action spinning rod but I do have a fly rod that I could hook a small spinning reel to.  Thanks for your help.  Have really enjoyed the daily reports and have learned a ton ... many thanks to all of you who have posted.  Had I caught some squid, I would have posted.  Will try again next year ... Port Angeles in July.

Sequim guy 9 months ago  Reply

Yes Sequim! Love the fly rod. Just want mine to have a longer butt end. Might go to custom rods and see what he can do.

Petzel 9 months ago

I have use two fishing pole before. One is flyrod. And another one is medium-light action rod. For sure that flyrod "feel" more about squid. One tip for using fly rod with spinning reel is that attach spinning reel with cablr tie in middle of habdle (or butt area). If you attach where fly reel was attached, you feel weird on jigging and it is really pain when you reel in squid. Just use cable tie and and stick reel on middle of hadle. Than you feel much better. Looks little odd though. :)

Lee 9 months ago

last night still good in Des moines from 9-11pm got limit.

catchalot 9 months ago  Reply

12/15/17, 1:45-3:30am, Edmonds. Dead. Caught only 2 squid. Fished high tide. Gonna take a break from squidding and head for the river for a while and do winter steelhead. Good luck fellow inkers and have a great Holiday.

Huli 9 months ago  Reply

Edmonds, 6-7pm, another slow evening. Even fishing go slow, usually few guys still catching squid and that make all others feel not fair. But tonight, squid are fair to all. Barely nothing for everyone. I got 1 squid. 3 inch cutie. That's it. But, I am not gave up yet. I will check it again tomorrow. :)

Lee 9 months ago  Reply

Thanks Jamo and Huli... Got back from Edmonds this AM. 12:30-3ish... couldn' stay after tide change. Wanted to. But body and eyes said no more for Petzel.  Walked away with 2 maybe 3 lbs. All different sizes. It was off and on. All depths. Sorta odd. Like Huli said. They would randomly dart around. But Edmonds would hit the jigs more then those normal "floater" squids that would just stare like Huli said. Funny inkers. They would hit right off the bottom.  Then next time 10 ft'ish down right before you cant see your jig, boom double.

I bet 4am-7ish could have been nice at Edmonds. Always picks up after you leave.  Ask Jamo;)

Petzel 9 months ago  Reply

It's still good to have 2 or 3 lbs at this time. Squids seem to be around, but we have to work harder to get them. Well, it's a good time for us to practice and fine tune our skills, right?

Squiddy 9 months ago

Yes! @ Squiddy, fine tuning is needed from this guy - I still have at least 25% if not more of mine hit the top jig then slip off, some hit the second jig. but even then they fall off more then I think they should. Or I snap it on sideways on the bottom jig.  I am either pulling to hard, to late, to fast, - did change my line from 4 lb. to 8 lb. thinking that the tighter/tougher line would be less 'drag' - stretch

of the line? I don't know - just trying different things and see what works best for me.  One thing I can say it seems the early morning bite is the best one lately for Edmonds.  Fun times, went back from the last few years and wow we have grown and at least for me - have learned a lot.  Now - who is coming over to help me clean some squid in the off-season? Party at the Petzels!

Petzel 9 months ago

Not a fine tuning for me. I need to learn how to jigging. I am horrible squidder. My 12 year old son is much better than me. I was shocked when my boy telling me that he need to hook squid when it feel 'lighter'. I read and heard about when squid touch jig it get lighter. but, personally I never feel it. so, I didn't tell my son about it. but, he figured out himself. I've been lucky to get limit because squid hit jig hard before. but, now days, I am the one who carry empty bucket in and out  :)

Lee 9 months ago

I'm still learning too Petzel, but it's really fun to do so. I find out that heavier line (8-10lbs) works better for me with less chance of being tangled. And yes, cleaning isn't that fun, but if you make into small packages that enough for one meal, then it would be ok. Just clean when you eat. :)

Squiddy 9 months ago

Lol Lee, but no matter how good you are, our kids will surpass us some day!!!

Squiddy 9 months ago

For cleaning squid, use scissors. It took me 1hour to clean 10 lbs.

Lee 9 months ago

11/14/17, 12:50-4:15am. Seattle the Wheel.. super slow. Caught 14 squid and end up giving it away to guys next to me. There some squid surface a lot of time but seems not interested in hitting our jigs. I can actually see them just swim by my jig or just stare at it. Hmmmm. I heard from people there that it's been hot during day break.

Just got back from Edmonds. Picked up around 3am. Got about 5 lbs. Thanks Pops! Always fun going out with someone else;)

I am wondering if the light makes a difference? Too much light the squid get spooked? When me and pop went out and got Limited the other day. My light set up is really low. It almost just like a spot light. But the squids tends to just hang around on the top water longer than I always see them. They hang around chasing little fish. Like maybe 2-3 feet of water. And it happens a lot of time during the morning. I always see them come up and swim away then disappears when bright light is being use. Just a though of what I noticed, squid getting picky?

Huli 9 months ago  Reply

Yes. When the season. Starts less light the better. Probably the same at the end of the season.

Edmonds,6pm-8pm. Now you can park where you want to, now you can fish  where you want to, now no more crowd, now city turned power on cleaning stations which was turned off last few weeks. Now no more tangled lines,  Now there is no squid. Actually there is some squid still, But not for me.  One guy catching every 5 min, next guy catching every 10min, other guy catching every 20min. All others just watching them while jigging their fishing pole hopelessly. End of evening report. Good luck to you AM people! Hope things change over midnight.

12/11/17, 1:30-3:30 am. It was a ghost town. People living when me and pop walked in and said it was dead, saw there buckets empty. We'll try it anyway. I got a light set up that not too bright. One of those off road truck light powered by a marine boat battery. I would say it's good enough. The first 1/2 hour was slow then squid start showing up on top of the water so we target them and it's lasted about 15 minutes. Then slows again. Squids come and go we have to play around on deep but we both got limit out. It's so wierd to be just the two of us and nobody else around. I almost felt guilty hehehehe kinda. There was another angler joined us a little early but he didn't stick around long enough for the squid to show up. We hit the outgoing tide.

Huli 9 months ago  Reply

12/08/17- 3:30-6:45am. Slow slow slow only caught maybe bout 2lbs and give it away to guy next to me. Squids seems be in the very deep or maybe hugging the bottom. Lost 4 jigs that I just bought yesterday of $50 worth.. sighhhh. It's a gamble now if you either catch them deep or loss some jigs.

Huli 9 months ago  Reply

Been home for awhile, then decided to check out Edmonds last night. Slow from 11pm - 1 am. Caught only 2 lbs. Many people left with empty buckets. Hopefully Edmonds season is not over.

Squiddy 9 months ago  Reply

2lbs is not bad at all from Edmonds these days. it is hard to get even handful count these days unless you spend more than 3hrs in freezing cold on lucky spot. hopefully it get better again. I am still checking it almost every day.

Lee 9 months ago

There were people leaving with their 10 # limits from Les Davis last night at around 5 pm.  It slowed down right as I got there but it soon picked up again.  Nice high tide & I caught 41 squid.

Hokum 9 months ago  Reply

12/07/17, 1:45-3:40 am. Yup, it's slows down in Edmonds for now. There squid to be catch but gotta put time on it. 2lbs for today and I give it all to this elderly man next to me that haven't got any on his bucket at all and he was there before me, looks like he's a newbbie. I did a little research and found out squid are migratory species. They start coming in from the north of Puget sound and moving to South at the end of the winter a lot stay put once mated and lay eggs then die. I guess I'll be chasing them squid to Seattle area now. It's just fun catching them and becoming an addiction. Have fun and be safe.

Huli 9 months ago  Reply

12/6, 5:30pm-7:30pm, Edmonds. deadly slow evening, heard it was slow yestersay also. hopefully it get better soon. Only caught 2 squid for 2hrs,  After 7pm, south end got busier. but, school seems small, not spreading. only 5~6 people catching. People quickly move to there and filled south pier. Other people just watching them catching. I am pretty sure south end of pier will be packed tomorrow evening. North got squid hit more last few days so most of regular with huge lights located on north side. But, north didn't produced tomight until I leave.
Cold, Windy, No squid, lost 2 jig ($20worth)
Happy squidding! Lol

Looked through the last few years and it seems to slow down a bit at this time. Give or take a day or 10 ;)  but still seems to be hit or miss from the post

Petzel 9 months ago  Reply

Seems like majority moved south. Heard it is hot south sounds. Even there is hot squid catch report on marine area 13 which is south of tacoma and olympia. When Edmonds  was hot, Tacoma was slow before. So. I think it is fair. :)

Lee 9 months ago

Keigan Powell since you live in Ballard you can go right down Shishole marina.
pm/am make sure you bring lights no lights on the fishing dock.

catchalot 9 months ago  Reply

@catchalot Is that the dock on the south end of the Shilshole Marina? Also, how far below is the water level, not far down like Edmonds or pretty far down like the wheel?

Rookie 9 months ago

There are two docks- A dock on the far south side of the marina, and the Golden Gardens pier on the far north. Not sure about the the GG pier, but I do know that A-dock closes at 10 PM and opens back around 7 AM. Water level isn't as far down as Edmonds, closer to what its like at the Wheel.

A Dock has lights that shine into the water so bringing a light isn't super necessary. The GG pier is pretty much black so bring lights. Action has been inconsistent recently when I've been out there, but its worth trying. Not at all crowded like other piers.

Jon 9 months ago

@Jon , thank you for great information, I always wanted try GG. I heard it is not crowded and good fishing sometimes.

Lee 9 months ago

I already put some post. But, here it is again. I fished Edmonds yesterday and today evening time. 7pm to 11pm yesterday and 4pm to 7pm today. Almost got nothing yesterday but it was pleasant trip. I got 7lbs in 1 hour or so today. But, I quit squidding before limit. On Yesterday, it was super slow around us. but we all talk each other and when someone got 1 squid, we all cheers. And lend squid jig for other and let novice squidder know what we knows. But, today, begging was good. We talked each other (not the same people) about how slow yesterday was and wish good luck to each other. Suddenly, around 5:30 squid hit hard and we all having fun catching squid. But, more people show up and start squeeze in between us. Fishing line got started tangles. It could tangle when current are strong and there is lots of people. even between skiled squidders. But, when greedy person cross cast or not managing there line, it happen more. People who been there earlier tried understand and bear incovenient, but thing got worse, they got angry whenever they got tangled and even yelled to people. Nice gentleman who share his 500w light with us and let new people squeez between us start packing his stuff. He didn't say anything. But, I feel his pain. I helped him packing light and I also quit.  I hope people enjoy this great fishery. But, I don't know how long I can enjoy this. Should I join to AM team like Hulu and Petzel? I wish I could!
Anyway, water is murky, something bright works better than pink or natural jig. Gentleman next to me slaying squid with half white half green 1.5 inch jig, I was following him with half white and half blue about same size. Something bright but not too big seems work better this water condition.  I tried my alltime favorite set of jig(one is whole pink and one is natural with pink/green tip) but, didn't worked tonight. So swiched  small white/orange and medium size white/blue and start catching again.

Lee 9 months ago  Reply

Hey Huli... yeah. That was me and my pops showed up around 3ish. Saw a crowd on the south side.  FYI. I have a blue cart next to my LED light. Anyone going out tonight?

Just arrived Edmonds pier. Looks like really slow night.

Lee 9 months ago  Reply

I never seen this slow. Caught 2 squid for  2 hrs. Edmonds pier is almost empty as of 9:22pm. Only few squidders here.

Lee 9 months ago

Got there 12/04/17 @ 1:45am it was slow the seal pup was chasing squids all over. Never seen lots squid jump out of the water I thought it was just small fishes. Was able to catch one here and there. Then around 2:00am it picks up I think the pup went away and the squids stays, we're on top of a huge school people catching me and my dad got limits and done 3:50am. Quids hang around really deep. Oh also, there where this huge current comes through with a dirty sediment wierd thing about it was coming straight from a far usually currents comes from sides. But, this one comes in like I thought there's a tsunami coming in. Makes me keep my eyes on the horizon. lol. But now worries squid still hooked up.

Huli 9 months ago

What Huli. Said. Hot on the south end it looked like.  I was on the north end. From 2:30-4:30. Got about 5 lbs.  Thanks Pops for coming out!!! That murky tide thing that Huli. Mentioned odd.

Petzel 9 months ago

  • New poster.  We have access to a private dock in Walker's Landing/Pickering Passage.  Up a ways from Tacoma.  There's not much in the way of public areas there so I don't know how heavily it's fished for squid.  Wondering what everyone's thoughts are about the area?  Is it worth my time to try?  Are squid EVERYWHERE this time of year or do they stay in the very south sound and don't move up into the fingers and inlets north of Tacoma?  Thanks

John Jones 9 months ago  Reply

12/2/17-Slow AM. Lots people than normal. Squids comes and go. Current makes it harder to get to where the squids are. People still catching though. Was there 1:30-6am with 5lbs

Huli 9 months ago  Reply

12/1/17- was at Edmonds this morning. It's slower than past week but I guess the tide made a difference and the wind was rough. 2:00am-3:45am and got 8lbs. Squids on a smaller side but some few big ones getting caught. Have to move 4 different spot till I'm on top of a school.i heard it got hot once I left.

Huli 9 months ago  Reply

First time poster.  Inkers r definitely in massive this year.  Went this morning at 5 and did limit by 6:45. Strong current with stiff breeze from the south was causing tangles.  Why can’t people understand 1 jig setup doesn’t work on days like this.
Most people were leaving when I got there so I’m assuming limits were fulfilled.
Edmonds..
Go get’em!

Fished Golden Gardens again tonight. Low Tide at 6:33pm, HT at 11:49. Came to Golden Gardens before Sunset, at 4:15pm. Not too many people. 1st squid was caught by my friend at 5:00pm. We left at 7:15pm with our limits of 10 lb. Seal was around again. Temperature 8*C, SSW wind, Cloudy. Was also fishing Sunday night,26.11.2017. Almost got my limit , 9.5lb of squid. On Sunday squid started biting before Sunset and after. When we had our lights not turned ON yet. When we turned them ON, seals came and it was no squid. Fish and Game came to check our licenses and our buckets. Be careful over there guys. Do Not Over limit. If you do - It's gonna be Court day in downtown of Seattle. Possibility of prison time. Big fine etc, that's what officer told us, judge will decide of course, of what you gonna get. So be careful. Do not over limit.  got this off a fishing post

Thanksgiving evening. Instead of pulling turkey from oven, I decide to pull squid. As expected, not much people on pier. But, sure there are still enough hardcore squidders who choose squid over thanksgiving dinner. Only South part of pier are packed. Squid start show up as soon as getting dark and it was pretty steady. Most people got limit by 6 and left. I was impressed with people next to me. Group of 5-6 young aisan people with good manner. Not only they are nice, they measured their catch. And left with their place clean. It is always pleasant fishing with nice people.
My 12 yr old son outperformed me today. He got limit in a hour while it took me about 2 hrs. My son was bored so he did smelt fishing while he waiting me. But, instead of smelt, he got few more squid with that tiny hook. Seems like squid bite anything today. So, I did little experiment. Throw something which is not likly catch squid. But, all worked. Only condition was that it have to glow and have to be presented

from bottom.
4:30-6:30pm, Edmonds, little cold, some wind, not muddy, seal is there but couldn' scare away squid today.
Happy thanksgiving everyone!

Hit and miss squidding at redondo night before last.  Sea Lion was probably to blame.  8 lbs in 4 hrs around low tide.  A rechargeable battery powered led light was left bungee corded to the railing.  I left it with the regular vietnamese  crowd on the far left side of the dock!

Lee 9 months ago  Reply

10 pounds of squid seems like a lot.  After 3 or 4 days of fishing When the action is hot, or going out with family members, the totals would add up quickly! You couldn't possibly eat them all. What's the best way to preserve your catch? Do squid freeze well? Sure wouldn't want to waste any of those tasty critters!

Papa Tom 9 months ago  Reply

Yes. Freeze easily for a year :)

Limited at Edmonds on the 18th from about 7-11pm. It was packed for the first few hours. Saw a couple small kids having a blast and getting many squid. It was also good to see them learn patience when tangled with others. The people around them were great telling them it’s not a big deal it happens when fishing just be patient and it can be untangled.

My coworker family have about 5 lb and they are happy also.  I think more people will show up now on. I don't know that is good or bad. :)
Squid was not peaky at all tonight. They hit jig hard. And because squid are bigger now, it is hard to miss it. Edmonds, 4:30-6:00pm,

Squidded Edmonds tonight with my closet 200 friends. 4:30-7pm was non-stop. One 20 minute pause.  Left with my 10lb limit while still catching every cast.  Weighed a neighbors 5 quart plastic pale, it was 12.08lbs with two inches left to the rim.  No one stops at the 5 quart indication line below the rim! He was staying to fill it up.  So is the legally enforced limit 5 quarts? or 10lbs? or whichever comes first?  A proper 5 quart pale may be over 10lbs.

Also there are WDFW ranger(uniform person with WDFW on his back) were at the entrance.  Who were checking me out, but I told him ,"I just got here"
Anyway I left at 1am. A lots of people and new people coming in. I was sleepy. And I live only 5 mins away. I will catch more next time. Lol good luck guys

Took my 11 yr old to Edmonds last night for an hour, managed to catch 5 but a couple questions that he has, how do you know when they grab on other than pulling up, is it just pulling at the right time or can you see something with the rod, also why are people using floats? It seems it just slides down the line, is it purely to see where your gear is? Thanks in advance for answering!

Earl Dennis 10 months ago  Reply

Wow talked about hot inking early morn. Got to Edmonds 1:45am and done at 3. For 1/2 hour was slow people fishing mid level of the water and not pulling much, so I decided to go deeper. Wow, every cast ink on. Then somewhere around 2 squids just all over the south side of the dock people catching left and right. I'm the first guy to head out with limit. But who knows I've seen Lowe's and home Depot buckets lined up. Seen lots of full buckets. I'm pretty sure this time of season they already know the rules and regulations or someone already mentioned it to them. But overall got limit and had fun.

Huli 10 months ago  Reply

As far as LED light setups go – will a 700 lumen spotlight work OK? Should I be looking at 1,000+ lumens? Will be using for pier fishing. I have a Rigid SR-M spotlight that's 700 lumens that I could use. Also, is a spotlight the way to go? Or something with a less focused beam, like a flood light? How many lumens are you guys putting out?
Thanks for the help!

Dash 10 months ago  Reply

700 lumens won't be enough, unless it's very dark and it's the only light source. Most people use 10,000+ lumens., which is almost impossible for rechargeable. If your only option is rechargeable flood light, try something over 4,000 lumens, and bring 2 lights if possible. If you have generator, a 200W or more LED light would be great.

Squiddy 10 months ago

I am using 100w flood led light which have approx 10000 lumen. But I am not a bright light at pier. Most people using 200-300w led light. Sometimes double.

Lee 10 months ago

Thanks for the help! I'll look into something brighter. The Rigid light was used on an ATV and lights things up pretty good, but I suppose you need something bigger to cut through the water.

Dash 10 months ago

Yup.  300 or 500 watt LED :)

It's actually good earlier around midnight - 2 AM. I got my limit in that time frame. And I was all the way near the end of the pier.

Not a report but a question...

Does anyone know of any Squid opportunities on Whidbey Island?
We have 1 short wharf here and the water is well under 30’ even at high tide.
What is the minimum depth the Squid would be found in?

It’s not worth the drive for me to get to Edmonds or anyplace else...heck it would almost be an overnight trip for me from the North end of Whidbey Island!

Thanks!

Wow - that was fun - Edmonds was hot from 3ish-5ish.  Easy limit.  Fish/Game was there at 3:30ish. looking for over limits I believe as I didn't have much and didn't ask for my lic. but did a group down... Decent sizes as well, I would say some of the Jumbos are in! Red - there was a lot out there, even when I left - green/white jig seemed to do better, but at the end they were hitting anything.  I put a triple jig to see if I could land more doubles and sure enough, more doubles and not my fav jigs.  Seems the early morning is also a good time to go.  More elbow room if tides are right -  Good luck everyone - its ink Time!

10-28 Nice run (15LB my wife and I)1930-2200 Des Moines.  Tonight 1730- 2010 (4.5LB) oh what a game :)  yes I been eating raw squid since 1980's

PNWCHAMP 10 months ago  Reply

For those who catch several limits per week, 40+lbs for example..what do you do with all that squid throughout the season??One can only eat and freeze so much. Also all that cleaning involved?!

Squidward 10 months ago  Reply

3 of us got 10 lbs each tonight at Edmonds done by 9: pm

red68 10 months ago  Reply

Nice Red. Could you tell if the entire pier was hot?

Petzel 10 months ago

Just getting started with squid fishing.  Driven down to Kingston from Sequim 3 times to fish high tides at night.  Caught about 20 squid one night and nothing on other two trips (no one on the pier was catching anything either).  Is squid fishing hit or miss like other types of fishing or am I not watching for key conditions like water clarity, moon etc.  There were good catch reports from Edmonds on both nights I caught nothing.

Sequim guy 10 months ago  Reply

Pops and I just got back from early morning at Edmonds, it was decent out. but man were they on the smaller side. was out from about 4-6 and got close to one limit.  Nice work Pops! now lets keep the piers clean everyone! if you see trash pick it up.

Petzel 10 months ago  Reply

easy limits at redondo..... if you can get your jig in the water.  Very crowded!  Brought my 13 yo daughter out last night, and my 9 yo out tonight.  Friendly crowd,  my kids tangled people more than once!  Thanks for your patience guys!  my Daughters had a blast!  A man left with 30 + pounds right in front of us when we arrived.  Not cool.

@Early Morning Edmonds peeps.  Anyone gone out very late to early morning lately?  Wondering if there is anyone out there along with those inkers. This Sat. Morn looks ok. 5am low tide

Petzel 10 months ago  Reply

Edmonds water was murky from the rain. even more murky on the tide change maybe to night will be better?. I only got 3 lbs.someone said the seal was there I never saw it.

red68 10 months ago  Reply

Edmonds was hot down south and maybe in the middle? Red let us know how the middle was... north side of Edmonds was slower. They were out there just not as big as I would like :) plus had to work for them... selfish I guess. Lost more then I should.  I pull in to fast and the pull off. I think. Plus a lot of sideways.  Tells me I am too slow

Petzel 10 months ago  Reply

Tacoma was slow last night. Muddy water from the river.

DL58 10 months ago  Reply

Does MA 13 ever produce squid? I don't expect limits or anything, but I want to take my kids out and if we catch one I would consider it a success.

Chris 10 months ago  Reply

Do you need a fishing license to catch squid?

fishkin4 10 months ago  Reply

Shellfish license would be good enough.

Squiddy 10 months ago

Which I'm guessing comes with the combo license?

fishkin4 10 months ago

Yes, combo license has everything.

Squiddy 10 months ago

Does squid hit on daytime?

Naz 10 months ago  Reply

@Naz -They say the do. They were hitting at Edmonds before the sun went down last night.

Petzel 10 months ago

Went to Shilshole last night. 7-930  Seemed like the squid were trying, but a seal was chasing them all over for the first hour and they went else where for the rest of my time.  Was a few spirts of activity, but everyone was a long ways from a limit when I left.  Had 8 between the 3 of us fishing. Heard it was good right at sunset with a limit walking off the dock when I arrived.  Apparently I just really need to bite the bullet and go down to the wheel...  Heard its been good that way.

red68 10 months ago  Reply

See below - put together a chat I had with my co-worker buddy *** It was supper hot at the big fairy wheel last night. I got my limit and left within 1hr jumble size too.  My friend just called and said that it's still hot this morning too.  My friend called me last night around 7 but i didn’t get there until 8:30. I left around 9:20 with limited. Everybody got their limit last night.  I got double almost every other pull if not back to back.  The guy next to me got 4 on one pulled.  I guess it's hot everywhere now. My other friends called and said that they are hot in Alki the whole weekend too, Even on the raining and windy Saturday *** I then said its probably slow at Edmonds now that wife is back and I am probably going out tonight! :) Happy Inking everyone, sounds like its prime time now. everywhere - at least in the Seattle areas

Petzel 10 months ago  Reply

Headed to Whidbey Is. this weekend and I have a few questions. 1.) Preferred place Oak Harbor or Coupeville Pier? 2.) Bring my own light set up? 3.) Is Whidbey Island even a good place for catching squid or am I more likely to catch a cold (am willing to catch one if I catch the other)?  I am very new to this so any advice and wisdom is much appreciated.

CallMeSquidmael a year ago  Reply

Does anyone have experience squidding when it's windy, like tonight? I never try this before, but wonder if squids are biting in a windy night, and how hard it is to jig. Thanks!

Squiddy a year ago  Reply

@Squiddy - yes you can catch in the wind just not very fun unless they are hitting heavy and often.  if its slow and/or the inkers are not hitting its hard to feel the rod when they play with it. so if its slow - no fun... if its hot and hitting hard fun!

Petzel a year ago  Reply

Haven’t been. Squidding this early before I usually go end of November. My buddy told me he went and limited in 4hrs. Well I checked old town Silverdale the pier was going well until the seals showed up. Had about 2-4 pounds decided to stop by Brownesville which is where I normally go Squidding. Even though it’s only 1 security guard that patrols the area. I’m not worried about my car being vandalized.

Went out to Edmonds last night and it was pretty quiet until about 8:30 when we started hitting squid. All pretty small though. Also, the crowd out there was sizeable. Must have been around 40+ fishermen out there.

FYI - co-worker went to the wheel last night - everyone got some but not big bite he said.  good size from 8-10:30... @ Bucket - I like incoming tide right at dusk :) but like Ron said - all tides will get squid, if they are there. Jigs are important.  Not sure about Outdoor - but squid candy jigs work best (or that type of jig) get different colors as they will hit one color over the other... Lights are key as well

Ryan: Thanks for the update, and that made me go out last night. However, I think I was a bit late and missed the hot action. Came around 11 PM at high tide, able to get 4 lbs in just 1 hour. After midnight, the squids left, and so did I.

Petzel a year ago

Big schools came in at 1:00 am but didn't  Bite. Wood have been good in the early morning hours I think.. Tides are bad right now for catching squid before midnight .But tonight is last night for summer crab season. So you won't have to fight the crabbing ropes to fish  squid. All the squid I saw caught were on the new blue jig. To many people using power strips to plug in light and 100 foot 16 gage cords keep blowing the main barker. The GFC barker won't take the load people put on them they need to use led lights. saw one guy with 4 - 500 wt. halogens the GFC won't take 2000 wt. load.

red68 a year ago  Reply

Went out last night with Pops in his boat.  Hit Brown's bay just north of Edmonds.  Caught more crab then squid.  And only 2 crab... had fun though Pops!!! But no schools and if we saw any inkers they were small and only a few. Dolphins were out though plus sea lion that caught a nice salmon. Good luck everyone

Tried on 7/2 in Kitsap (Ilahhee City Dock) -- 0 squid, no bites, and the pier lights did not turn on at 10pm as it has done in the the past.  I've usually had good luck there in July even in the day time, but none yet.  Hopefully it picks up soon, and the lights actually come one.

and I did post jigging for squid, I need to remember that its not a true jig.  You need to feel the little inkers hit your line then you jig :) its all timing and presentation when its this early in the season...  Light gear, no swivels, 2+ jigs (Squid Candy- can't beat it)  just my two years of experience though... still a newbie in my book.  Keep Squidding and Keep Learning everyone!

A friend and I went to the Seattle Aquarium Sat Jan 28th from 8PM till 2:30AM.  Caught 15 between the two of us.  Realize that's probably not the mother lode of squid hauls, but in three tries that's by far the best I've ever done.  Seemed to be best when we first got there at 8PM and then again around 1AM (high tide was at 2ish that night).  Meant to post this earlier, but still catching up on sleep I missed that night.
